Youth Support Worker – Youth Services

Part Time Position

4 to 12 hours per week

Thursday evening and or Saturday

About our Organisation 

Kurbingui Youth and Family Development is a not-for-profit community service organisation that offers services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, families, children and young people living within the Greater Brisbane, Moreton Bay and South East Queensland regions.

Kurbingui delivers various services covering areas such as family support, domestic and family violence, alcohol and substance abuse, cultural education and engagement programs, employment and training, education support for families and children from preschool to tertiary, recreation and sports, early years, youth, women’s and men’s programs and cultural group activities, and health and nutrition.

The Role

This position is based at Chermside Westfield Shopping Centre.

The Youth Support Worker will assist to provide diversion from committing offences, de-escalate crisis situations, advocate, and liaise with Westfield Chermside staff, security, police and community members. 

Youth Workers may help young people with issues such as building self-esteem and confidence, family conflict, homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, education and finding a job through referral pathways.

In this role you may be required to support young people with brief intervention and referral to internal and external supports and other professional services when issues are complex or specific.

Whether you are an experienced Youth Support Worker, or just starting your career in the sector, we are looking for people with passion, commitment, and empathy. To be successful, you will be dedicated to improving the lives of young people and have the following skills and experience:

• Ability to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, families, elders and organisations within the local community
• Basic understanding of models of youth work including strengths-based approach, trauma-informed, person-centred support to young people
• Knowledge of contemporary youth issues and trends
• Knowledge of the range of services available for young people including accommodation, counselling, family support, legal, education, employment, drugs and alcohol
• Work sensitively, professionally and with confidentiality when engaging with young people, carers, elders, family and other support networks
• Ability to develop rapport and build relationships with young people who often exhibit complex trauma-based behaviours
• Capacity to remain calm and rational in heightened and stressful situations; able to self-regulate your responses
• Be a strong role-model with confidence to engage, encourage and divert young people from offending behaviours into pro-social activities such as education, vocational community programs and social activities
• Excellent communication skills; able to relate to young people, other Youth Support Workers, supervisors in an appropriate manner – both verbally and in writing
• Participate as a team member – collaborating with and supporting those you work with

Qualifications/ Certifications

• A relevant qualification or studying towards Youth or Community Services at a minimum Certificate III in Community Services, Youth Work or experience or strong desire to pursue a career in youth work
• Blue Card / or ability to obtain prior to commencement
• Drivers Licence

Remuneration & Benefits

The pay rate is in line with the ‘Fisher’ & ‘316 Regulation’ pay scale with other employment terms and conditions Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 including:

• 17.5% Annual Leave Loading
