About Kurbingui Youth & Family Development

Kurbingui Youth and Family Development is a not-for-profit community service organisation that offers services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, families, children and young people living within the Greater Brisbane, Moreton Bay and South East Qld regions.

We deliver various community services covering areas such as employment and training, family support, domestic and family violence, alcohol and substance abuse, cultural education and engagement programs, education support for families and children from preschool to tertiary, recreation and sports, early years, youth, women’s and men’s programs and cultural group activities, and health and nutrition.

Kurbingui provides National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) services governed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). The aim of the NDIS is to improve the lives of people who have a disability. Kurbingui supports this by building independence, and maximising individual choice and control, promoting and supporting social inclusion and community participation through individual and group supports.

About the Role

The role of a Support Worker is to provide a range of supports to Kurbingui’s participants who experience a variety of disabilities. This support is provided on an individual basis and in small or large group settings, in the participant’s home, at Kurbingui’s sites or in the community. Support Workers have a critical role in providing high quality, safe and effective supports, which assist participants to enhance their quality of life and maximise their ability and opportunity to exercise choice and control.

Most of the work time is performed during the day, but the role may be required to work evenings, weekends and public holiday as required by client need. 

The types of support we provide include but are not limited to:

  • Assist personal and daily activities
  • Community access assistance
  • Transport
  • Cooking 
  • Cleaning

To be successful in the role, you will (Key Selection Criteria)

  • Have an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and societies and the issues which impact upon them in contemporary society.
  • Previous experience in similar role using strength-based framework with complex family needs.
  • Professional or lived experience supporting someone with a disability. 
  • An understanding of the disability sector and person-centred support.
  • Excellent communication skills, reporting skills, and a compassionate approach to work.
  • Experience in working with people with disabilities, challenging behaviours, complex physical disabilities and mental health challenges.
  • Flexibility and availability are essential in this role, with the ability to work a variety of shifts; morning, day, afternoon, evening, night and weekends.
  • Knowledge of NDIS Quality and compliance requirements and guidelines and an understanding of the National Standards for Disability (desirable).
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in conducting safety and risk assessments.

Qualifications/Certifications

  • Mandatory – current Drivers Licence (QLD)
  • Evidence of COVID vaccination or contraindication must be provided prior to commencement
  • Mandatory – possession of, or ability to obtain, a ‘Positive Notice’ Blue card – must be obtained / provided prior to commencement
  • Mandatory – Yellow Card or NDIS Worker Screening Check – must be obtained / provided prior to commencement
  • Desirable – qualifications and/or equal professional experience in mental health, disability, aged care, allied health, social work, community services.
  • First Aid and CPR – or (willingness to obtain prior to commencement)
  • Highly Desirable -Cert III in Individual Support (or willing to commence upon employment))
  • NDIS Workers Orientation Module (or willing to obtain prior to/upon commencement)
  • Registered, roadworthy car with comprehensive insurance
  • Must provide a current Drivers history check (5 years)

Remuneration

This position offers a competitive remuneration package in line with the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2020.
