Kurbingui Youth & Family Development is a not-for-profit Aboriginal community-controlled organisation. Kurbingui offers support to around 13,600 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people – approximately seven percent of Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population – lives in the greater Brisbane, Moreton Bay and South East Bayside regions.
Kurbingui has an established footprint throughout these regions which began in 2001 providing services to meet the needs of young people. Kurbingui has continued to grow in the number of services delivered to the community in areas such as employment and training, family support, domestic and family violence, alcohol and substance abuse, cultural education and engagement, support targeting successful educational outcomes for families and children and young people from preschool to tertiary, recreation and sports, early years, youth, women and men, cultural group activities, social, emotional well-being – suicide prevention, crisis response and treatment and health and nutrition.
The Numula Family Safety Program
The purpose of the Numula Family Safety Program is to implement safety strategies and effective interventions that address Domestic and Family Violence through the provision of a culturally safe educational and healing environment. The overall aim of the program is to work with men and women and their families to increase the safety, health and well-being for all in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and broader community members. The name Numula is from “Jaggera” language meaning “Embrace”.
This program enables the exploration and development of flexible and innovative service provision that respects and honours Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. The program works collaboratively with a range of stakeholders, mentors, consultants and mainstream organisations to enhance a holistic approach to supporting the needs of our Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander men, women and their children and young people.
The program is underpinned by the following specific objectives:
- Reduce acceptance of Family and Domestic Violence (increase mindfulness, resilience, awareness, skills and knowledge to help individuals and families make informed decisions that improve quality of life);
- Capture data to assist evaluation (feedback, surveys);
- Improve access to family violence support services (victims/perpetrators and children); and
- Enhance families’ quality of life through peer support programs.
The Practitioner provides culturally safe support through referrals, information and advice to assist children, young people, individuals and families who are impacted by domestic and family violence.
The Practitioner will support the team with providing a therapeutic learning environment through contributing to group training and workshops that address domestic and family violence aimed at developing personal skills, knowledge and resources that reduce risk and increase safety for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples experiencing and or perpetrating domestic and family violence. The Practitioner will contribute to and participate in activities, case management and casework in collaboration with a range of stakeholders, mentors, consultants and mainstream organisations to enhance holistic service provision.
To be successful in the role, you will have:
- Experience working within the community service sector, specifically in the field of family and domestic violence.
- Demonstrated experience in providing coordinated responses to children, young people and families impacted by family and domestic violence.
- Demonstrated understanding and experience of the issues and barriers faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and individuals in contemporary society.
- Knowledge, experience and ability to align work practice with state and federal legislation, cultural protocols, standards and guidelines.
- Demonstrated capacity to implement collaborative practice with clients, co-workers, partnership agencies, government and non-government services.
- Knowledge and understanding of strength-based, family-focused and child-centred frameworks.
- Strong commitment to providing high-quality service provision to clients, co-workers, partnership stakeholders and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities.
- Ability to meet performance outcomes as reasonably directed by the organisation and the funding body.
- Effective time-management, ability to prioritise and complete tasks.
- Capacity to effectively work independently and as part of the broader organisational teams.
- Effective communication skills – written, verbal and interpersonal; including report-writing.
- Demonstrated competence in use of business technology, internet and desktop applications. For example, MS Outlook, Word, Excel spreadsheets, and database packages.
- First Aid and CPR (or ability to obtain)
- Current Drivers Licence (QLD)
- Current ‘Positive Notice’ Blue card
Key Selection Criteria:
- Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and their cultures, and a general understanding of the issues that are affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in contemporary Australian society.
- Highly developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication, consultation, negotiation and liaison skills (especially in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities) including the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Demonstrated experience in working effectively with families, children and external sources/agencies, specifically in the field of family and domestic violence. This will include case management as well as coordinating and/or participating in activities such as group work (eg. women’s group) and workshops to support clients around related issues pertaining to domestic and family violence.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team; internally and externally across agencies, in the delivery and support of family and domestic violence responses, case management / casework as well as group work and activities for men, women and children.
- Understanding of child protection and juvenile justice systems in Queensland including the significance of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child placement principles, relevant legislation, policies and practices.
- Demonstrated time management skills, with ability to support the team with various client engagement, networking and administrative and reporting requirements; including use of databases.
- Willing and able to work within a culturally competent context and Kurbingui Youth and Family Development’s mission, vision and values.
Based in Zillmere, this full-time position will be a 6-month initial contract with the possibility of extension. You will receive a competitive remuneration package and salary sacrifice options in line with the ‘Fisher’ & ‘316 Regulation’ pay scale and Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010.
