Family Violence Project
The Family Violence Project was sequestered off from YDFP by necessity of client numbers and needs and is currently funded until June 2012. It is aimed at creating a community response to the problem of violence in our community in an effort to reduce the impact on all members of the community. Family and domestic violence has occurred in Indigenous communities as a result of many factors: substance abuse, the impact of colonisation, health issues, trauma and the resulting loss and grief, unemployment and lack of education and training.
Our model of operation is to build and strengthen relationships with existing agencies and networks that provide support and counselling to individuals and families. We also link our clients to other activities offered by Kurbingui in order to broaden social networks and provide healthy and positive participation opportunities. Intervention strategies include Women’s Yarning Circles, individual support and counselling, working with parents and individuals towards reunification with children who are in care as a result of family violence, Anger and Compassion courses, Fax-Back Program and Community Awareness meetings.
From this Project two separate groups have also formed – the Bud Ja Dhan Men’s Group and the Jumbunna Women’s Group which now operate independently..
