Welcome to Kurbingui

 

A professional not for profit community organisation delivering support services to the Indigenous community in the northern suburbs of Brisbane.

KYDA’s focuses on the individual needs of our clients,
be they community members, young people, business or service providers.  This focus is maintained during the provision of  our services and continues well past successful completion.  Catering for the needs of our clients whilst providing direction and mentoring in a supportive environment is the key to KYDA’s success.

  •   We have a range of Employment & Training programs including Work Placement Programs, which involve working in Kurbingui Star Newspaper  and at an off site location working in constructions. 

  • Kurbingui also provides Adult Numeracy & Literacy for the community and training to become a Tutor of Numeracy & Literacy.

  • Our Families project includes Drug & Alcohol,   and a Family Violence support Program

  • Youth Activities  focuses on healthy and positive lifestyle choices and general well being. 

What’s On at Kurbingui.

  • Outdoor Family Movie & BBQ Night on the 25th September at Kurbingui. Come to Kurbingui for an outdoor movie night it will be held in the back yard at 34 Handford Rd, Zillmere.  It will kick off at 6.00pm and end at about 9.00pm. 
     

  • Launch of “Jumbunna” Women’s Group  Womens Group meets every second Thursday evening 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm. Join in on the fun activities and have cuppa and a yarn.
     

  • Engagement Blackfella Way  - Kurbingui’s Cultural Program facilitates a cultural awareness training seminar named “Engagement Blackfella Way”. This is aimed directly at government services and non-government organizations that deal with Indigenous people and provides engagement strategies for workers to use when supporting Indigenous people. ‘Engagement Blackfella Way’ provides an understanding of how non-Indigenous workers can assist and communicate with Australian Indigenous people. Local Indigenous people from youth to elders have participated in this event to offer not only testimonials for the group but to also engage in the promotion of their culture and break down barriers that hinder them accessing mainstream agencies.   • Employment & Training  In July two Work Placement projects will begin -

    Kurbingui  delivers culturally appropriate Adult Numeracy & Literacy training for people not confident with their existing skills.  This program is ongoing and is funded by the Dept of  Employment, Economic Development and Innovation. 

     In October Kurbingui will be providing training for members of the community who are interested in becoming Volunteer Literacy & Numeracy Tutors.  This training will be delivered at Kurbingui in Zillmere.  If you are interested in becoming a Tutor please phone Ra on (07) 3265 2055 or email at star@kurbingui.org.au to register.

    The next construction work placement will begin in January/February 2010.   This program suits long-term unemployed Indigenous people who are looking to gain skills to re-enter the work force.  For further information and or to register your interest call Rachel on (07) 3265 2055 or email employment@kurbingui.org.au.

     


Introducing Jessica OiReily. Jess is a Torres Strait Islander women. She grew up in the Bribie Island area and has worked in the government arena for nine years and has made the move back into the community. Jess is employed at Kurbingui as the new project officer in the Yeaca Dhargo Family Project. Welcome Jess!
